Johns Condition
May 15, 2007 ¦ 2:29pm
John was in a car accident on May 11 and is in critical condition at St. John's Hospital in Springfield. He is holding his own at this time. He has several surgeries ahead of him at this time. We ask for your prayers. He was hit head on east of Nokomis, Il. It took the Nokomis fire dept. 45 minutes to cut him out of his truck. He was air lifted to St. John's Hospital. He died twice but have managed to bring him back. What a fighter. The Lord has plans for this man!
May 18 Friday: John is doing much better, they have scheduled his reconstructive facial surgery for Monday. They have repaired his pelvis and put a rod in his left leg. They are keeping him comfortable at this time. You can send him cards at St. John's Hospital in Springfield in the ICU Unit. He recognizes everyone and is very responsive. Your prayers are working wonders, keep them coming!!! We will have the auction May 19, Caleb Cantrell has volunteered his time for this. Come and give John your support.Several people are planning a spagetti dinner benefit, I will let you know more as we complete the details. There will be a meeting at the Moweaqua city park to plan this event. If you would like to join and help, just show up. You can contact Ruth Wright, Carla Black or Dave Jones.
May 21 Sunday John had another MRI and his reconstructive facial surgery is planned for Monday the 21. He seem agitated today and wants to "GO Home!" Thank God they say he will not remember much of this, if any. Thank you for all your prayers!
May 22 Tuesday John had his facial reconstruction today. It was a 6 hour surgery and he came through it fine. He now is the "Bionic Man" with all the plates, pins and wires he will be the refrigerator magnet king.
May 23 Wednesday John had a restless night but they are trying to keep him painfree. His face is quite swollen but other than that he looks like the "old John". They put a cover his trach on Monday and he could talk a little. His first words were "Take me Home!" Hopefully he'll be in a private room in a couple of weeks or sooner. Thank you all for the prayers and continued support.
May 23 2:00 p.m. Just received word from doctor that he bleeding internally again and they are operating on him at 7:30 a.m. on Thursday. Keep him in your prayers. Thank You!!!!!
May 24 John came through the surgery well, but has a high temp, they have him on a cooling blanket and it seems to be coming down. Since he came back from surgery he has been thrashing around and can't seem to quiet down and rest. They have taken him off morphine and have tried another pain reliver. hope that works! He is quite alot of pain and discomfort. Pray for him.
May 25 The hospital has given John a new pain patch and a different pain reliever and finally at 3:00 a.m. on Sat. morning he quieted down and his fever broke and he got a good nights sleep. It was through prayer chains that this happened. Thank you God.
May 26 Saturday: John has kind of come out of his fog today. He said "someone hit my trunk didn't they?" he remembers a little of being flown somewhere and he asks about the auction next week. They may let him sit up in a wheel chair next week.It seems that he's becoming his old self again. The sale is on for June 2 Saturday, I'll have more info on that date.
May 27 Sunday John had a really good day today. He enjoyed his cards everyone has been sending, watched John Wayne movies and enjoys his feet being massaged. Very responsive. Starting to get bored, wants to come home. Enjoyed some visitors today.
May 28 Monday Had a really good nights sleep. keeps getting better every day, anxious to get home. He wants to know if he could eat but still getting everything through a IV. He rolls his eyes when you can't understand everything he's trying to tell you. Jaws wired shut for another 4 weeks.
May 29 Tuesday John was transfered to 6th floor. His room # is 680. He would love to have visitors and cards. He had a good night last night, but coughed quite a bit, his lungs are clear and he is stable. One more step to getting him home.
May 30 Wednesday John had a rough night, coughing. They sat him on the side of the bed and dangle his legs, then had him stand a couple of times. John is still strong, it's hard to believe that he still has that much strength in his arms and legs. But he is determined to get well. His abdomen is still quite tender since they had surgery on that area twice in 3 days. They are going to put in a smaller trach (sp) so each time it will be smaller and finally only a small hole will be there and it grow shut in a couple of weeks. Remember John in your prayers, he has a long road ahead of him.
They are having a benefit for him at the Hog Trough Two in Moweaqua on Sunday from 4:00-7:00 p.m. See you there!!!!
May 31 Thursday John got to sit in a wheel chair today! What an improvement, we are sooooo excited. Hopefully by this time next week or sooner he will be at Memorial Hospital in Springfield for rehab. Then its one day at a time. He has the will power to do this. Keep him in your prayers!!!! John accepted Christ as his Savior today!!!! A prayer has been answered!
Keep watching this site for daily reports!
June 1 Friday John had a bad night, didn't sleep too well. We think he has days and nights mixed up. He was in ICU for so long, that he lost rack of time.
June 2 Saturday Had a better day, slept alot, really wore out. Had a few sips of water and handled it well.
June 3 Sunday Didn't sleep too well last night, but got to have therapy today and sat in the wheel chair, a little shakey and weak but very promising! Had an X-Ray on his stomach, and found that his feeding tube wasn't in far enough so they extended it down further, he didn't like it too much. He's resting and brother Ed and sister-in-law Cheryl are sitting with him so I can go to the benefit thst Hog Trough is having for him today. We are so lucky to have family and friends to support us. Thank you so very much.
June 4 Monday Very restless and still can't sleep. I think he's going through withdrawl of all the narcotics he's been on. Talking a little better even though he's wired shut. Very discouraged, but doesn't realize how bad he really was.
June 5 Tuesday Pretty much the same, I make him smile even though he doesn't want to. He has therapy everyday for an hour or so. Has learned how to sit by himself and sit on the side of the bed to dangle his feet.
June 6 Wednesday Going to Rehab at Memorial Hospital in Springfield today. He has to complete at least 3 hours of therapy per day or he is dismissed from the program and has to go to a nursing home with rehab.
Got John over here at Memorial about 6:00 p.m. and settled into his room. Number of room is 318 on B floor. He can have visitors after 4:00 p.m. each day. This is "BOOT CAMP" and he will undergo demanding therapy schedule. They will work on physical, mental and eye/hand therapy.
June 7 Thursday Came home to my bed last night and slept like the dead. First time to sleep at home for awhile. Going up to see John and give him a haircut tonight. He has to dress for therapy, no hospital gowns here!!! Eating from a straw now and not really caring for it, but it sure beats having a tube from your nose to your stomach. Yek!! Lost 23 pounds but not too bad. Won't have to go to Weight Watchers for awhile. I'm sure he'll be tired each day. If you do go see him please stay for a short time, since he feels he has to entertain everyone. Thanks you all for your support and prayers
June 8 Friday They evaluated John today and are deciding what kinds of therapy to progress with. He has to eat most everything on his tray or they would put his tube back into his stomach. YEK!!!Still depressed but probably will until he gets all the meds out of his system. Had visistors last night and enjoyed that. They will work on him pretty good today and he should be pretty tired. No visitors before 4:00 p.m. each day but would like cards and visitors in the evenings. Room 318B.
June 9 Saturday John had a good day. Cut his hair and a good shave, what a a man!! Went outside to the courtyard today. A really nice place, good fresh air just the thought of being outside was 'FABULOUS!!!"When visitors come on Sunday we're going outside and stay away from his hospital room. He's doing great.
June 10 Sunday Brother Ed and his wife and kids came by to see him. Went out to the Court Yard and played cards for an hour or so. He's building his strength, has rehab daily except Sunday.
June 11 Monday Continues to do great!
June 12 Tuesday Said he could go home on Wednesday of this week! Can't believe it. It's amazing that 1 month ago Monday he was in the accident. Getting a hospital bed set up in the dining room tonight. I don't want him cooped up in one of the bedrooms, this way he will be out in the main area.
Just received word from the hospital that he has to wait till Friday, he has a psudo aneurysm (blood filled sac around an artery that filled up in the muscle tissue) not life threatening, but has to come out so it doesn't get any bigger, small surgery but it still makes him come later than he thought. Still pretty good considering his condition on entering the hospital on May 11. The prayers have resulted in miracle after another. In the mean time trying to get everything together to have him home on Friday. He will come home with his trach. John' mom and I had a class on cleaning and the care of his trach. Still has some staples in his lower abdomen, they look ready to come out, but the Doctor wants them in a little longer.
All in all he's ready to come HOME!!!!!
Note: John had his surgery at 1:00 p.m. today and did very well, he has a drain tube and they are still saying he will be home Friday P.M. He's feeling very good after surgery.
June 13 Wednesday John had his surgery and everything us still looking good. Had a good day. Mouth wires are still killing him, hopefully he doesn't have to have them much longer.
June 14 Thursday Drain tube was taken out of his groin where he had surgery. Looks great, got a shave. The RN said one of the doctors was going to "maybe" take his wires off and replace with them with rubber bands.
June 15 Friday As far as I know, I'm, going to Springfield to bring "Johnnie" home!!!! I'll post later and let you know!
YAHOO!!!!!!! He's HOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Saturday June 16 What a relief, he's finally home and in such good spirits. Just like Dorothy said "There's No Place Like Home!" all he needed was some Ruby Slippers.
June 17 Sunday Had quite a bit of company today and he loved it. We went to the hospital today to see our new grandson, he is adorable! Also went to Walmart, you know you're getting better when you go to Wally World. Loved the scooter there, watch out world!!! Friends of ours loaned John a scooter and we take walks every evening, well he rides and I walk. We needed the exersise!!!
June 18 Monday A good day, took a walk and had a generally excellent day.
June 19 Tuesday Had a few visitors today, had the rehab lady out and occupational therapist also. they will come 3 times a week. He's getting stronger everyday. I am so thankful to have him home. he feels he's putting me out and I would be better off without him, he doesn't realize that I'm so happy to have him home and wouldn't want to be without him.
June 20 Wednesday First day back to work. John's mom stayed with him today. Did some therapy on his legs, his abdomen is a little sore. He's getting his 6 pack back! Had quite a few visitors this evening and it wore him out. He was a little testy so everyone left early. It was a little overwhelming for him.
June 21 Thursday John's boss from Waste Management came by today and took him to the landfill for a couple of hours, had a really good time. Talked to all of the guys. Went and helped at the auction setting items in the computer. Had some therapy and his reps are up to 25. Good Job!!!
June 22 Friday Mom stayed with John while I went to work today. Loves mashed potatoes, but then his mom made them for him. Thank God for mom's and their taters! She has been a blessing for him. A nice bonding time. Went for a walk, well I walked and he rode his scooter. A really good day. Put his own socks and shoes on today. He is doing wonderful!!!! Going to the auction tomorrow. See you there.
June 23-28 John has been doing great. Big improvements every day. His since of humor is just beyond John. Quite a since of humor. Just ask D-Boy, his buddy. His benefit is this Sunday, hope everyone can come out and say hi to John.
July 2 Monday Well John is all tuckered out! What a Sunday, I never seen so many people at the park except for the Pow Wow. Friends and family and people we have never met were there. The food was great including those desserts. The Auction went really well, hope you all got something if you were bidding or the bucket raffle. The bands were great and did a super job of entertaining everyone. John was overwhelmed and humbled by everyone showing up for him. You don't know how many friends you have until the chips are down. Thanks you all for coming and making a Fabulous day for him. Thank you all again. By the way he is progressing faster than anyone would have thought. Another miracle in the making!!! Also he is auctioneering and sounds like his old self.
July 8 Sunday John has a doctor's appt. tomorrow to take out his trach. He can't wait. He says he's waiting to wake up from this dream. Went to check out the accident site today, but he doesn't remember anything, thank God!!! No more wheel chair, he needs to excersise and get stronger. Still gets tired easily, but everything will come in time. His humor is much better and he jokes around quite a bit. He's doing great!! Our miracle man!!
July 9 Monday Got his trach out today and it has already sealed up. Had a lot of metal removed from his upper jaw and teeth. The rest comes out in 2 weeks. He will have to have braces later but all in all he looks great! Just gained 1 pound even though he is eating everything in sight. Still tires easily but doing great.
July 13 Friday Had therapy today and went really well. He's doing a little more each day, but were working on his stamina. Still tires easily. Doctor's say he has a lot of internal healing still going on. But he's still with us. Thank God.
August 18 Saturday
John is doing much better. We are riding our bikes (and they didn't think he would walk), and he even auctioned last Sat. at the auction for about a 1/2 hour. It's remarkable!! He is still trying to build up his strength and endurance. He has to have another surgery sometime soon. A bone has decided to rebuild more than it should and he has a bone growth the size of a potato on his upper leg. Then he will do therapy at the hospital. We're getting there, slowly but shirley. Keep him in your prayers!!!
sEPT. 23 I haven't updated this site lately but John is doing better every day. He's hoping he can go back to work by the first of the year. He has two more surgeries to undergo. He has to have his jaws broken and relined and wired again for about 6-8 weeks. Also he has a growth on his upper femur, a muscle which has turned into bone, has to be removed. There is a major nerve that runs through the muscle, but it has turned to bone. It has to be chipped away and removed. If they damage the nerve then his leg will be weak forever. They said that it was just a small chance of that happening. He will be off work about 6 to 8 weeks. Then John has to have braces to straighten his teeth so they will be even so he can chew and bite his food. All in all his outlook is good and he gets his strength from God. I'll try to update every week. Thanks for keeping John in your prayers!!
January 16, 2008
It has been a busy and stressful year but we have managed to pull through it, thank everyone for your thoughts and prayers. John has been back to work 6 weeks. He still has a hitch in his git a long. He has a surgery coming up early part of June. He gets his braces sometime next month and when they have straightened his teeth, they are going to break his upper jaw to align everything back and wire him shut. Maybe that won't be so bad, not really! He can auction for about an hour but then his jaws get cramped. All in all he's doing great!!!! Anything major and I will post it.
November 4, 2008
John has had his braces on about two months now, he has only two teeth that touch to chew. Eating is difficult at best. He will have them on about another year and then brake his upper jaw and wire him for about 8 weeks. Then he will under go his dental work with crowns, partials and root canals. He is auctioning about 7 hours at a time now and working full time at Waste Management. All in all he doing fabulous!!!!
April 1 2009 : John has received an award from Waste Management for Employee of the Year. He is 1 of 5 employees out of 50,000 employees to receive this honor. John has been very active in the Gideon Mininstery and going to area schools to give talks on his accident to the Dare & Driver's Ed programs. His mission is to show the students an accident in real life and hopefully reach the kids! Continue praying for him. He may get his braces off in July and have his surgery soon after. All in all we are truly blessed to have survived and been encouraged these past 2 years.
April 15 John went to Houston, Tx. for the awards ceremony. He received a ring similiar to a Super Bowl ring. It was given to him for Operator of the Year out of 50,000 employees. Quite an honor, since it hasn't even been 2 years since his accident. They treated him like a King in Houston.
On November 9, John is going in to have his jaws broken and repositioned. This will enable him to eat normally again. He will be off work for about 3 weeks. Pray that everything goes well. This should be the last surgery that is needed.
Thank You,
Marlene
